Thanksgiving Week in DFW: Booking Airport Transportation When Everyone Else Is Too

Every year around the second week of November, the phone starts ringing with the same request: a pickup at DFW on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving for four people and a lot of luggage. By the Monday of that week, we're turning people away. It's the one stretch of the calendar where we genuinely can't help everyone who calls, and it's entirely avoidable if you book in October.

This is a practical guide to the week: which days are hard, how far ahead to book, what to tell us, and how the Cowboys' Thanksgiving game complicates things if your family is anywhere near Arlington.

Which days are actually the problem

DFW is American's largest hub and routinely handles more passengers than almost any airport on earth. Thanksgiving week compresses a month of family travel into six days, but they aren't equally bad.

• Tuesday before Thanksgiving: Busy, manageable. Good day to arrive if you have the flexibility.
• Wednesday before: The peak. Arrivals stack up from mid-morning through late evening. Curb congestion at every terminal.
• Thanksgiving Day: Quiet at the airports in the morning, then the Cowboys game takes over the roads between DFW and Arlington from about noon.
• Friday after: Moderate. Shoppers on the roads, not much airport pressure.
• Saturday after: Busy departures.
• Sunday after: The other peak. Heaviest departure day of the year at DFW. Security lines are long from 5 a.m.

If you can move a flight off Wednesday or Sunday, do it. If you can't, the rest of this piece is for you.

How far ahead to book

Three to four weeks for Wednesday arrivals and Sunday departures. Two weeks is possible but tight. The week of, we're usually full for the peak windows, though early mornings and odd hours sometimes open up.

Rideshare doesn't have this constraint, which is its one real advantage that week. But it has the other problem in spades: Wednesday afternoon at DFW is exactly when surge pricing spikes and the rideshare zones become a slow-moving line of people with rolling bags. What makes holiday pickups different

More people, more bags

A business traveler has a carry-on. A family arriving for Thanksgiving has four checked bags, a car seat, and a pie. Tell us the headcount and the bag count honestly. Our standard executive SUV seats five with a normal luggage load; five adults with eight bags need a different plan, and we'd rather know in advance.

Grandparents and flyers who don't fly often

For anyone who'd find DFW's size disorienting, book a meet-and-greet. The chauffeur waits inside baggage claim with a name sign, helps with bags, and walks them to the car. Multiple arrivals, one house

Siblings landing two hours apart on different airlines. You can book two separate pickups, or one hourly hold where the chauffeur collects the first arrival, waits, and collects the second. Love Field is a good escape valve

If relatives are flying Southwest, Love Field is smaller and less chaotic than DFW that week, and it's closer to most of Dallas. Our Love Field versus DFW comparison has the details.

Thanksgiving Day and the Cowboys game

This year the Cowboys host the Eagles at 3:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving. If your family is in Arlington, Grand Prairie, Mansfield, or anywhere that involves I-30 or Highway 360 between noon and 7, the game will affect you whether or not you're going.

• Airport arrivals on Thanksgiving Day heading to Arlington should aim to land before 11 a.m. or after 8 p.m.

• If you're not going to the game but live nearby, don't schedule anyone's airport pickup for 6:30 p.m. That's the post-game exit.

Departures on the Sunday after

This is the day people underestimate. Everyone in Dallas is flying home at once. Security at DFW's larger terminals can run 45 minutes to an hour from mid-morning through mid-afternoon. Our guidance:

• Domestic from DFW: be at the terminal 2 hours 15 minutes before departure. From central Dallas, that means leaving 2 hours 45 minutes before.
• International from Terminal D: 3 hours at the terminal.
• Love Field: 90 minutes at the terminal is usually comfortable.

The same logic applies to Christmas week

December 22 and 23 are the heavy arrival days; December 26 through 28 the heavy departures. The Cowboys host Jacksonville on Sunday, December 27 at 7:20 p.m., which puts a stadium exit on top of a big departure night. Book Christmas week by early December.

Frequently asked questions

Do you charge more during Thanksgiving week?

No. Our published rates hold every day of the year. A 20-mile airport transfer is $160 on Thanksgiving Wednesday, same as any Tuesday in March. We just book out earlier.

How many people fit in one vehicle with luggage?

Our executive SUV seats up to five with a normal luggage load. For bigger families or heavy luggage, tell us the numbers and we'll assign the right vehicle or a second one.

Can you track a delayed flight on a holiday?

Yes. We watch every inbound flight and adjust the pickup. Weather delays are common that week; you won't pay wait time for them.

Can you pick up at DFW and drop at two different addresses?

Yes. A second stop on a point-to-point transfer is fine; we'll quote it up front rather than surprise you.
