A Chauffeured Night Out in Fort Worth: Stockyards, Sundance Square, and the Cultural District

Dallas gets the skyline and the airports. Fort Worth gets the better evening. It's a city built at a human scale, where three genuinely distinct districts sit within a fifteen-minute drive of each other and every one of them is more fun when you're not thinking about where you left the car.

We drive a lot of visitors and a fair number of Dallas locals across Fort Worth on Friday and Saturday nights. This is the itinerary we'd build for someone with one evening and a chauffeur.

The three districts, and why you can't walk between them

The Stockyards sit north of downtown along Exchange Avenue: brick streets, the cattle drive, Billy Bob's, and a hotel scene that got serious a few years ago. Sundance Square is the downtown core, roughly 35 blocks of restaurants, Bass Performance Hall, and the plaza. The Cultural District is west of downtown along Camp Bowie and Lancaster: the Kimbell, the Modern, the Amon Carter, and Dickies Arena.

They're each walkable inside. Between them, you're driving. Stockyards to Sundance is about ten minutes; Sundance to the Cultural District another ten. It's the perfect distance for a chauffeur and the exact wrong distance for rideshare, which will surge on a Saturday night the moment a Dickies Arena show lets out.

Late afternoon: the Stockyards

Start here if you want the cattle drive. The Fort Worth Herd walks Exchange Avenue twice a day, at 11:30 in the morning and 4 in the afternoon. The 4 o'clock is the one to catch: get dropped near the corner of Exchange and Main about 3:40, find a spot on the north side of the street, and you'll have a clear view without fighting the tour buses.

After the drive, wander. Mule Alley is the redeveloped stretch of old horse and mule barns, now home to Hotel Drover, a few very good restaurants, and shops that are less kitschy than the strip closer to Main. Second Rodeo Brewing has a big patio. If you want a real drink with a view, the bar at Hotel Drover is the move.

Pickup tip: Exchange Avenue is one-way and crowded. We'll drop you at Exchange and Main and collect you on the Mule Alley side, at Hotel Drover's entrance, where a chauffeur can actually stop. Your driver will have the spot pinned before you ask.

Early evening: Sundance Square for dinner

Downtown Fort Worth has a compact, well-lit restaurant scene that doesn't require a reservation war. Reata is the classic Texas fine-dining choice, with a rooftop that's worth requesting. Grace is the quieter, more refined option a block away. For something less formal, the plaza area has a half-dozen solid spots, and the walk between any of them is a few minutes.

If you're catching a show at Bass Hall, book a 6:00 dinner; the walk to the hall is under five minutes from most of the square. Give yourself time to look up at the building's exterior angels, which are worth it.

Pickup tip: Sundance Square Plaza itself is pedestrianized. Ask your chauffeur to meet you on Commerce Street at the Bass Hall corner or on Main at 4th, both of which have room to stop without blocking traffic. We'll text you a pin when we're in position.

Late evening: the Cultural District

Most people think of this as a daytime district, and for the museums it is. But the Modern Art Museum stays open late on Fridays, and Café Modern is one of the better-kept dinner secrets in the city, with the pond and Tadao Ando's concrete outside the glass. If you'd rather not eat twice, come here for a nightcap instead: the Cultural District's bars along West 7th are a short drive and considerably younger in energy than downtown.

If there's a concert or event at Dickies Arena, factor in that 14,000 people are leaving at the same time. A chauffeur who's parked away from the arena and meets you at a pre-agreed corner will have you moving while the garage is still emptying.

What to know about Fort Worth traffic

It's mild compared to Dallas, with two exceptions. I-30 between the cities slows badly in both directions between 4 and 7 on weekdays, and event nights at Dickies Arena or Texas Christian University's stadium clog the Cultural District's approach roads for an hour on either side.
